Rapid advances in game engine, generative AI, blockchain, cloud, 5G, VR/AR and haptic technologies are converging to make the future metaverse possible today. Hundreds of millions of people are already playing and creating in immersive virtual world environments like Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft. Mass consumer and enterprise adoption is inevitable as unbelievable experiences are built by an open ecosystem of creative talent who will unlock the true power of the metaverse. Increasing complexity and scale in metaverse applications with full physics interactions and collisions requires more compute capacity. The simulation "compute budget" is a function of size, persistence, and fidelity of a game, as well as the number of concurrent users, complex AI beings, and interactive objects. The distributed compute infrastructure required to support metaverse-scale gaming has remained a really hard problem to solve. Games engines have a limit of <100 concurrent players in a single shard even for simple games. Spatial partitioning platforms have a fixed mathematical limit of 1-15k concurrent users and are costly and difficult to use.
